Meet Wilson High Schools (2023-2024) Varsity Girls Soccer team! This team is led by head coach Robert Sloan, and head assistant coach Don Watts. In the Tiger’s second game of the season against the South Florence Bruins, they faced a challenging defeat. Despite the loss, the girls demonstrated resilience, particularly in the first half where they managed to keep the game close with a score of 2-0. However, early in the second half, they conceded three goals which proved to be a turning point. Despite this setback, the Tigers' defense tightened, preventing South from scoring any further goals. Unfortunately, though, they couldn't find the net themselves. The standout performer of the game was freshman Maddison Dunham whose remarkable nine saves, including some acrobatic ones, played a crucial role in keeping the Tigers in contention. Additionally, players Esmeralda A. Manilla and Alexis Moore displayed stellar defensive skills, effectively neutralizing South's strongest player and contributing to the team's defensive efforts. While it was a tough loss, there were certainly positive aspects to build upon for the remainder of the season.

In the face of this difficulty, freshman standout Maddison Dunham emerged as the undeniable hero of the game, showcasing her exceptional talent with an impressive tally of 18 saves. While the team mustered a few promising flashes, managing to test the opposing defense with several shots on goal, it ultimately served as a valuable learning experience. This encounter served as a crucial benchmark early in the season, offering invaluable insights and providing a clear gauge of the team's strengths and areas for improvement moving forward.

Precision, Power, and Teamwork

This is coach Robert Sloan’s first year back at Wilson, but the team last year went 0-16 overall and 0-10 in region play. Two of their key players are both seniors, Katlyn Crosland and Grace Haughn. A new player that will be key is freshman, Maddison Dunham. Half of the team this year did not play varsity last year. The team this year is a very young team and they are very eager to learn and improve. The players all have very great attitudes coming into the new season. This will be a foundational year for the program moving forward. The coach shared with us that he is hesitant to set a goal of how many games to win, but that we will see definitive improvement on the field and hold a high standard for our student-athletes in the classroom and in having great sportsmanship. As of now Myrtle Beach is the defending region champion, they and West Florence will be the two biggest challenges in our region.

Robert Sloan: Making His Return To the Tigers

Robert Sloan, the head coach for the girls soccer team was born here in Florence SC. He attended Florence Christian School and graduated from Clemson University. Coach Sloan participated in soccer while in high school and furthermore in 2010 when his son started playing. He got into coaching the sport after being brought into the field by his club. Over the years Sloan progressed as a coach, gaining his US Soccer Federation C license in 2023. He coached club soccer for 16 years and high school soccer for 15 years. He has coached at many schools including South Florence, The King's Academy, The Governor's School in Hartsville, and Denmark Tech. Coach Sloan also boasts a state championship under his belt from the Governor's school in 2018. His inspiration in coaching came from his high school coach that he quotes, “pushed me to be great in all aspects of my life.” That has since become Sloan’s coaching philosophy, his goal is to guide the next generation of leaders.
